The powerful wartime story of the Ashton family. Living in Liverpool during the Second World War they struggle to deal with the harsh realities of life. The Breach In The Dyke:
Tony Briggs helps Margaret Porter in her search for a flat with her baby - eventually, after a row, moving back home. John Porter is fighting in France and gets separated from the rest of his Division.
The War Office Regrets:
The Ashton family eagerly awaits news of John Porter. David, home on 48-hour leave is questioned by Sheila about Peggy. Harry Porter receives a letter from the War Office and after deliberating for two days, takes it to the Ashtons.
For Strategic Reasons:
Phillip is stationed in Guernsey and receives the sad news that John Porter is missing in action. He becomes romantically involved with Dominique, a local girl. The army then decides they should all leave the island but Phillip leaves without saying goodbye to Dominique.
The Night They Hit No. 8:
After a night of bad air raids David and Sheila's children are missing. The local policeman brings a lost boy for the Ashton's to care for. Margaret Porter gives birth to a son.
