Description

After suffering a terrible family tragedy Powlett-Jones finds that Bamfylde provides the comfort and support that helps him to carry on. He relies particularly on the friendship and kindness of the Headmaster and his wife as well as Ian Howarth, the English Master.

Powlett-Jones is still preoccupied with the missing schoolboy when his life is torn apart after he receives news of a tragic family accident. He goes walking on the moors and makes a surprise discovery.

Herries has announced his retirement and the race for the Headmaster's job is on. Carter, Powlett-Jones, and outsiders Mr Alcock and a Mr Pettigrew are the candidates.

The new Headmaster is appointed and is the opposite to affable Mr Herries. His cold personality makes him a mystery to the other masters. Julia pays a surprise visit and makes an announcement.

Alcock becomes increasingly fixated by discipline and is cynical of any of the boys' friendships. Powlett-Jones speaks out when Alcock asks for his help. Christine Forster visits Bamfylde.
