Shirley Temple was one of the most popular child stars in the history of cinema, the number one box-office attraction from 1935 to 1938 (Clark Gable was merely second). She was considered a genuine child prodigy, and in 1934, at the age of six, she won a special Academy Award for the eight big grossing films she made that year. In The Little Princess a fairytale set in Victorian London, Shirley plays an army waif not believing her father died in the war.
