In this powerful adaptation of the William Inge play, Burt Lancaster stars as Doc Delaney, an ageing man caught in a loveless marriage. Unhappy due to the loss of a child, Doc turms to alocohol and his wife Lola (the Oscar-winning Shirley Booth) directs all her love towards their dog Sheba. When Sheba disappears, their lives change when a young girl comes to stay and while Doc has feelings of desire for the girl which rekindle his passion, Lola builds a maternal relationship.
