In this memorable adaptation of Somerset Maugham's classic novel, Leslie Howard plays Philip Carey, a student of medicine in London who becomes besotted with Mildred (Bette Davis), a waitress. Phillip falls in love with her and pursues her, only to have her break a date with him to go out with a salesman, and subsequently run off. She returns to him, pregnant, and he takes her back, only for her to run off again with another medical student. Once again he takes her back but with her new born, only to have her go crazy in his apartment, causing irreparable damage, which leaves him hurt an unable to finish his studies...
