In writer Simon Beaufoy's drama, Yasmin (Archie Panjabi) is a confident and Westernised young Muslim woman living and working in a northern mill town. Although she had previously rebelled against her Pakistani customs as a teenager, with the help of her friends and co-workers she has now begun trying to live simultaneously within the conflicting traditions of both British and Pakistani cultures. In order to appease her widowed father, Yasmin agrees to marry a cousin "from home". Unfortunately, her new husband turns out to be a Pakistani goatherd unversed in Western ways.

Yasmin's confidence begins to evaporate post-9/11, when she becomes increasingly ostracised at work and her husband is interred as a result of the new anti-terror laws. Facing a serious crisis of identity and fighting for her husband's release, Yasmin discovers a new determination and sense of purpose when she is forced to re-evaluate not only her relationships but also her faith and her culture.
