On leaving the Air Force, racing driver Peter Wells (Richard Conte) rejoins the Italian Corsi team. But Wells is dogged by bad luck and his wife, Pat (Mari Aldon), begs him to retire. Wells’ team manager Bellario (Peter Illing) and fellow driver Dallapiccola (George Coulouris) fear their old friend has lost his nerve. When Pat can take no more of her husband’s reckless behaviour she leaves him, but Wells remains determined to take part in the Piemonte Grand Prix. Behind the wheel of a potentially lethal car, Wells has everything to prove and nothing left to lose. This early Hammer classic was filmed on location at Goodwood in 1954 and features some ofthe leading racing drivers of the day, doubling for the film’s stars on the track. As well as specially shot racing sequences, Mask of Dust includes fascinating archive footage from classic races at Rheims, Goodwood and elsewhere.
