Lovejoy discovers that beautiful and wealthy widow Cassandra Lynch has been conned to the tune of £500,000 by international antiques dealer Harry Catapodis with a series of skilful forgeries. Catapodis is also selling a tea bowl from which, he claims, Emperor Hirohito of Japan drank before renouncing his divinity to Japanese banker Toshiro Tanaka, the tea bowl is a sacred object worth $2m but, to Lovejoy, it's a fake. Outraged by Catapodis and his schemes, Lovejoy agrees to orchestrate an antiques 'sting' to allow both Cassie and Toshiro to get their own back. Assisted by a dubious East End pawnbroker called Mordechai, Lovejoy makes use of a priceless Russian icon to pull the biggest con of his career, which could leave him a wealthy man.
