Triple-bill of dramas. In 'Meet Joe Black' (1998), media tycoon William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) is approaching his sixty-fifth birthday when he encounters Death (Brad Pitt) himself. Parrish is offered a few extra days of life if he allows the Grim Reaper into his home and, keen to finish off an important company merger, agrees, introducing his new guest to friends and family as Joe Black. Joe begins to fall in love with Parrish's daughter, Susan (Claire Forlani), who is engaged to Drew (Jake Weber), Parrish's deputy. When Parrish decides against the merger, Drew stages a boardroom coup and attempts to oust the tycoon. 'Mona Lisa Smile' (2003) is set in 1953 at Wellesley College, a prestigious women's college in New England with a student population of young women from respectable, priviledged families. On the whole the girls, products of a time when women's roles were strictly defined, show more interest in marrying well than in achieving intellectual growth or artistic freedom. But when a new art history professor, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), begins teaching at the college, their repressed upbringings and narrow ideas are brought into question. A Berkeley graduate with progressive ideas, Watson sets out to stretch her students intellectually, and challenge their limited outlook on life. Finally, in 'Erin Brockovich' (2000), Roberts plays a brassy, unemployed, twice-divorced single mother. When she is injured in a motor accident and her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), fails to win her any compensation, her solution is to insist that Ed provides recompense by employing her at his firm. Erin's new colleagues do not take her seriously at first, but when she discovers a cover-up by a water company who have been poisoning the local community, she and Ed set out to win the victims a multi-million settlement.
