During the campaign trail for state governor, a corpse is found floating in the lake and private eye Danny O’Brien (Danny Huston) is hired to discover its identity. The more he discovers, he more it rekindles his old investigative reporting instincts which reveal a scandalous cover-up involving illegal migrant workers, disused mines, and environmental damage which follow a corrupt path to the ranch of Senator Pilager, whose tongue-tied son, Dickie (Chris Cooper), is running for governor. John Sayles' movie is an astute comment on the Bush era America.
