Neil Simon trims his roots for Brighton Beach Memoirs an amusing an unabrasive comedy about the day to day life of a Jewish family living in overcroded splendour in pre-war Brooklyn. The story is told by Eugene (Jonathan Silverman), a ham fisted teenager whose fantasies of sex and baseball are continuously being interrupted by his mother who keeps him busy running errands. Her life revolves around liver and cabbage, whilst his dad (Bob Dishy) spends all his time worrying about Hitler. Meanwhile Eugene's elder brother when he's not gambling his wages in the pool hall, take severy opportunity to spy on his naked cousin... The period detail is impeccable and the one-liners arrive with machine gun efficiency.
