They call him Fresh. A twelve year-old Brooklyn boy who runs drugs for the local gangs. Fresh has learned his 'street wisdom' from his near-vagrant father, a chess genius whom Fresh is forbidden to see. In the park on Washington Square, they play chess. Fresh learns to think on his feet, use all the pieces on the board – even sacrifice his favourites, the ones he loves the most – to capture the king and win. Fresh wants to get out of the dangerous drug world he is caught up in but knows that he is caught. Influenced by his chess lessons, Fresh begins to devise an ingenious trap playing off the gangs against each other.
