It was the year when British pop music soared into the stratosphere and conquered the world. When young men became peacocks and young women goddesses, when strange new tribes called Mods and Rockers - and weirdest of all, Hippies - walked the streets. When London, the city of Beefeaters and Tudor pubs, became the beating heart of a social revolution that changed life-styles around the world.
1966, was the year that changed Britain for good, breaking down class barriers. When working girls were given off-the-peg elegance by the mass-produced designs of Mary Quant, and instantly became (in the words of the song by 'The Kinks') "Dedicated Followers of Fashion." It was the age of the mini-skirt and the mini-car, of long hair and short memories. But no one can forget a year whose crowning moment was that glorious day when Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup for England.
