1976, the year of the long hot summer that became a drought, turned us all into sun-worshippers. We demonstrated that British gift for turning potential disaster into a picnic. Every weekend we migrated to the seaside. At home, on unbearably hot nights we promenaded in flared slacks and platform-sole shoes. And how we danced and sang along to the year's chart-toppers.

It was a lively year for pop music with the sweet harmonies of 'The Bay City Rollers' in sharp contrast to the raucous vitality of an assorted bunch of rebels who played something called 'Punk.' Looking abroad, we admired the relaxed grace of our Queen gliding through the showbiz excesses of America's bicentennial celebrations. Closer to home we were startled by Harold Wilson's resignation, charmed by John Curry's ice-skating, and awed by the cricket of Clive Lloyd's West Indians.
