Directed by: Yasujiro Ozu

A pair of classics by celebrated Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu based around the themes of family and social obligation. 'Late Autumn'(1960) is considered the more accessible face of Ozu - a light comedy based on the peculiarly Japanese struggle between the widow Akiko played by Setsuko Hara and her daughter Ayako (Yoko Tsukasa). Ayako cares for her ageing widowed mother out of a sense of love and responsibility. Akiko, however, acutely aware of the burden she's putting on her daughter, wants Ayako to marry and have a life. Friends of Akiko's deceased husband begin to meddle and find suitors not only for Ayako, but Akiko as well - both extremely reluctant potential partners. 'Autumn Afternoon' (1962) is perhaps more classic Ozu - the tender story of a widower with a young daughter. Japanese social mores in such an instance, dictate that it is her responsibility to take care of her father for the rest of his life - taking the place of her mother. Shuhei Hirayama(Chishu Ryu) however, shuns this course of action and instead arranges a marriage for a highly disinclined Michiko (Shima Iwashita).
