Description
Martin Bryce has a rather important position at Mole Valley Valves, but it is when he arrives home at his quiet suburban close that his life really kicks into gear. For Martin is at the hub of every committee, campaign, and club in the vicinity with complete trust in the effectiveness of constant action, careful organisation and well-observed filing procedures.
Fortunately, Martin has the 'almost' whole-hearted support of his wife, Anne. Dedicated, patient and tolerant, she only occasionally questions his pomposity and lack of passion. Even when she does, Martin still has devoted disciples in his matching-jumper wearing neighbours, Howard and Hilda, who are only too happy to reinforce his obsessions and self-importance.
Then Paul moves in next door. Paul is everything Martin isn't: relaxed, stylish, fun, handsome - and single. If Martin hasn't yet noticed the flirty chemistry between his wife and the newcomer, he's quite peeved that Howard and Hilda seem to have taken to the super-smooth interloper, and he's incandescent that Paul seems to mock his important work in the community... and things are only going to get worse.
