Cecil B. DeMille's star-studded spectacular about life under the Big Top won a Best Picture Oscar and Best Original Story. Circus owner Brad Braden (Charlton Heston) hires stunt daredevil The Great Sebastian as his star attraction, even though this demotes his trapeze artist girlfriend Holly to second billing. The two performers try to outdo each other in the ring, whilst Sebastian tries to sweep her off her feet on terra ferma. Meanwhile, gangsters attempt to take a slice of the circus' action, and Buttons the Clown (James Stewart) proves to have a shadowy past.
