Peter O'Toole, Peter Ustinov and Cyril Cusack star in this saga of 1900s Dublin life, adapted from the novels of James Plunkett. Jim Larkin (O'Toole) arrives in Dublin during one of its most turbulent eras to organise the unions and get a fair deal for the working man in a time of widespread poverty and destitution. Larkin, nicknamed 'Big Jim', founded the Worker's Union of Ireland and became best-known for his role in the Dublin Lockout of 1913 after employees were threatened with losing their jobs if they refused to sign a pledge not to join a union or engage in any sympathetic strikes.
