Aristocratic Tony Last (James Wilby) is devoted to his family and his crumbling, over-large family seat. His bored wife Brenda (Kristin Scott Thomas) takes a lover and a flat in London, creating a small scandal of which Tony is blissfully unaware. When their young son is killed in a hunting accident, Brenda initiates divorce proceedings.
